Mercaptans Thioglycolic Acid (TGA)
  • How should TGA be stored?
  • What are some applications of TGA?
  • Does Arkema make any TGA esters?
  • What are some recommended materials of construction for TGA?
  • What are the test methods for TGA?

    How should TGA be stored?
TGA should be kept in a cool area no hotter than 50ºF(10ºC). At higher temperatures, degradation will occur until an equilibrium of approx. 85% is reached. To maximize shelf life and purity, Arkema recommends storing TGA at 50ºF(10ºC).

What are some applications of TGA?

    • To manufacture tin stabilizers for plastic additives
    • Cosmetics: depilatory creams and hair care products
    • Down-hole oil field corrosion inhibitor
    • Chain transfer agent
    • Depilatory agent for leather

Does Arkema make any TGA esters?
Yes. Arkema makes 2-ethyl hexyl mercaptoacetate (2-EHMA) and isooctyl mercaptoacetate (IOMA), both used to make PVC tin stabilizers.

What are some recommended materials of construction for TGA?
Storage tanks: Avoid the presence of iron. Polymeric materials are preferred over stainless steel. We recommend reinforced polypropylene.

What are the test methods for TGA?
Assay: Iodometry Iron content: TGA is neutralized by ammonia. Color comparison of results MCAA: Gas chromatography
