Arkemas new HFC 427A refrigerant SNAP approved for HCFC 22 retrofit use.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has notified Arkema that it intends to grant the Company’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) petition to allow Arkema’s new HFC, Forane® 427A commercial refrigerant, to be used in a broad array of refrigeration systems as a retrofit for HCFC-22. Forane® 427A is a non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerant that has zero ozone-depletion potential (ODP), with performance comparable to HCFC-22. Forane® 427A, developed by Arkema’s research and development as a proprietary product, is a new alternative for end users seeking a non-ozone depleting substitute for existing HCFC-22 applications, such as retail food refrigeration, industrial process air conditioning, chillers, household refrigerators and freezers, residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pumps, and air conditioning for buses and passenger trains. In addition to having comparable performance to HCFC-22, Forane® 427A is one of the lowest GWP HCFC-22 retrofits available on the market today. Customers who require immediate alternatives to HCFC-22 will find Forane® 427A a good substitute. Arkema’s Craig Thomas, market manager for refrigerants in North America, says “Forane® 427A is another example of how Arkema provides options for our refrigerant customers when transitioning out of HCFC-22 into more environmentally sustainable products.” Last year, Arkema received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Protection Award for its continued leadership, innovation and achievement in improving the energy efficiency of its manufacturing sites and for developing products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Since 1990, the Company has reduced its use of greenhouse gases in its worldwide manufacturing processes by two-thirds. Arkema, a world leader in fluorochemicals The world’s second largest fluorochemicals producer, Arkema currently operates four industrial facilities: Pierre-Bénite in France, Zaramillo in Spain, Changshu in China, and Calvert City, Kentucky, in the United States. The products manufactured in these plants are sold under the Forane® trademark to the refrigeration and air-conditioning (construction and automobile), insulating foam, solvent, and aerosol markets. A world-class chemical company, Arkema combines three strategically related, integrated businesses: Vinyl Products, Industrial Chemicals and Performance Products. With operations in more than 40 countries and 17,000 employees, the company reported revenue of €5.7 billion (2006). Leveraging six research centers in France, the United States and Japan and internationally recognized brands, Arkema holds leadership positions in each of its principal markets.

Arkema Joins U.S. EPAs GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Program

Arkema’s Fluorochemicals Business has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, which includes refrigerant manufacturers, several major supermarket chains, and refrigeration systems manufacturers. The GreenChill partnership works to promote green technologies, strategies, and practices that protect the stratospheric ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The GreenChill Program is proud to have Arkema join its growing list of partners,” says Julius Banks, Acting Branch Chief of the U.S. EPA’s Alternatives and Emissions Reduction Branch. “Arkema’s role as an industry leader in the Fluorochemicals Business and in environmental sustainability demonstrates that environmental stewardship makes good business sense.”

“During the last decade, Arkema has invested approximately $250 million in next-generation refrigerant development, manufacturing and product stewardship,” said Emanuel (Manny) Katz, Regional Group President, North America for Arkema’s Fluorochemicals Business. “Arkema is an advocate of the responsible use of materials that contribute to ozone layer depletion and global warming, and our participation in the GreenChill Program fits well with our business strategy,” he said.

In addition to joining GreenChill, Arkema completed several important initiatives in 2007 to meet the challenges of responsible use. Arkema has invested in HFC-32, a non-ozone depleting component of HFC-410A, with a new production unit at its Calvert City, Kentucky plant. The investment will help provide a secure supply of HFC-410A during the phaseout of HCFC-22. Arkema has also invested in HFC-427A, a non-ozone depleting retrofit for HCFC-22. This product provides a further alternative for users who need an immediate replacement for HCFC-22. Arkema’s new HFC product, Forane® 427A, has been SNAP (Significant New Alternative Policy) approved by the EPA for commercial applications, such as in supermarket refrigeration.

“The EPA is pleased that industry continues to develop new environmentally-sound alternatives to HCFC-22 in preparation for the upcoming phase out in 2010,” says Margaret Sheppard, Coordinator for EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy Program.

Arkema received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Protection Award in 2007 for its continued leadership, innovation and achievement in improving the energy efficiency of its manufacturing sites and for developing products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Since 1990, the Company has reduced its use of greenhouse gases in its worldwide manufacturing processes by two-thirds.

In addition to Arkema, the GreenChill partnership includes: Whole Foods Market, Food Lion, Giant Eagle Inc., Hannaford Bros. Co., Harris Teeter, Hill PHOENIX, Honeywell, Kysor/Warren, Publix Super Markets Inc., and DuPont.

Arkema Fluorochemicals Continues Program of Investments

Arkema, one of the world’s largest fluorochemicals producers, continues its program of major investments in both advanced refrigerant technology and expansion of its global capacity.

“During the last decade, Arkema has invested approximately $250 million in next-generation refrigerant development, manufacturing and product stewardship,” said Emanuel (Manny) Katz, Regional Group President, North America for Arkema’s Fluorochemicals business. “In addition, Arkema has long been an advocate of the responsible use of materials that contribute to ozone layer depletion and global warming,” he said.

“We’ve invested heavily to ensure that our industry has sufficient capacity to serve our customers with the latest fluorochemical technology while we continue to work on the development of new fluids with a negligible impact on the ozone layer and a low global warming potential (GWP),” said Katz.

Arkema currently operates four industrial facilities on three continents: Pierre-Bénite in France, Zaramillo in Spain, Changshu in China, and Calvert City, Kentucky in the United States. The products manufactured in these four plants are sold under the Forane trademark to the refrigeration and air-conditioning (construction and automobile), insulating foam, solvent, and aerosol industries.

A strategic facility to supply the North American market In the past year, Arkema has successfully started up its new HFC-32 next-generation refrigerant plant at its Calvert City facility, including the blending of HFC-32 into Forane® 410A.

The start-up at Calvert City has benefited from the technological experience of Arkema’s Zaramillo, Spain HFC-32 production plant, which was successfully launched in 2003. With this capacity addition, Arkema’s Calvert City plant is now the world’s largest HFC-32 production site, benefiting from proven technology, an ideal location to supply the North American market, and experienced personnel.

“The plant has been operating since June and thus far we’ve had great success in making commercial-grade HFC-32 and blending it to make Forane® 410A, ” said Katz.

HFC-32 is an essential component of tomorrow’s refrigerant blends (HFCs or Hydro Fluorocarbons), including Forane® 410A, which has emerged as the successor to HCFC-22 refrigerant. Scheduled to begin its phase-out by the year 2010 in North America, Forane®22 will be replaced by Forane®410A over the next few years.

New Arkema-Daikin Asian Joint Ventures To Serve Growing Asian Markets Arkema also recently announced the creation of two joint ventures in partnership with Daikin, one for the production of HFC-125 at the Changshu, China operation, and the other for the marketing of refrigerant fluid blends in the Asia-Pacific region. The expertise of both companies in HFC production and blending associated with their market position establish this partnership as the leader for refrigerant fluids in the Asia-Pacific region.

Arkema Daikin Fluorochemicals Co. Ltd, a 60% Arkema and 40% Daikin joint venture, is focused on the production and marketing of HFC-125. Arkema is providing both process and technological expertise for the design and construction of the plant, which will be located on its Changshu site, thereby strengthening the existing industrial platform. This world-scale plant, the first of this size in Asia, is scheduled to come on stream in 2010. Together with HFC-32, HFC-125 is an essential component of new generation refrigerant blends, most notably, HFC-410A.

Pierre Chanoine, Group President of Arkema’s Fluorochemicals Business Unit, commented, "This new HFC-125 production plant will enable us to fulfill increasing demand from the Asian market and to assist our customers in switching to new generation blends."

Daikin Arkema Refrigerants Asia Ltd, a 60% Daikin and 40% Arkema joint venture, will focus on the production and marketing in the Asia-Pacific region of new generation HFC refrigerant fluid blends, in particular the R-410A blend. This latest phase in the collaboration between Arkema and Daikin is part of Arkema’s strategy to expand its fluorochemicals business in Asia’s fast growing markets.

"The creation of both joint ventures specifically dedicated to the refrigerant fluid markets in Asia-Pacific region,” said Chanoine, “represents a major step in our global strategy for the marketing of HFC blends to our key global customers”.
