Kynar® PVDF Fuel Cell Separator Plates
Kynar® Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and Kynar Flex® PVDFare high purity polymers, particularly well suited to a number of fuel cell applications, including:
- proton exchange membranes,
- conductive bipolar flow plates, and
- cell plate coatings
Proton Exchange Membranes
Kynar® PVDF polymers can be modified to manufacture membranes for PEM fuel cells including irect methanol technologies. The advantage of using Kynar® PVDF polymers in this process instead of conventional-type membranes is reduced methanol cross-over.
Bipolar Flow Plates
Kynar® PVDF polymer can be used in combination with graphite to mold conductive bipolar flow plates. The Kynar® PVDF/graphite flow plate can be molded instead of machined as required with 100% graphite construction. Thus, the flow plate is easier and more economical to manufacture, and lighter as well. Typical constructions are 80% graphite-20% Kynar® PVDF, or 85% graphite-15% Kynar® PVDF. In either case, the flow plate's electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance is maintained when Kynar® PVDF is substituted for a portion of graphite.
Conductive Coatings
Kynar® PVDF coatings can also be formulated for applying to metal cell plates as an alternative to molding the cell plates from a conductive Kynar® PVDF compound.
