Forane®Refrigerants New Vehicles

Forane® 134a has been the standard refrigerant used in all mobile air conditioning applications since the phaseout of R12. Applications using Forane® 134a include mobile systems in cars, buses, trucks and agriculture vehicles. Forane® 134a meets all safety and quality specifications defined by ASHRAE 34 and ARI-700.

Properties Forane®R-134a
Boiling Point @ 1 atm (deg F) -14.9
Liquid Density (lb/cu ft) 75.31
Critical Temperature (deg F) 214.0
Critical Pressure (psia) 589.8
Latent Heat of Vaporization @bp (BTU/lb) 92.8

Existing Systems

Most R-12 systems can be easily converted to Forane® 134a with little modification due to the close characteristics of these two refrigerants.

Retrofitting car air conditioning systems

Technicians should check with the particular equipment manufacturer before performing a retrofit. The following instructions should provide a general overview for retrofitting an R-12 system to Forane® 134a.

  1. Inspect the mobile A/C system, checking for leaks, component problems, etc.
  2. Recover the existing R-12 charge.
  3. Recover the existing lubricant to a level satisfying the equipment manufacturers recommendations.
  4. Replace the filter drier.
  5. Evacuate the system.
  6. Charge the system with a lubricant compatible with Forane® 134a (Usually POE or PAG oil).
  7. Charge the system with Forane® 134a with approximately 80-90% of the original R-12 charge weight.
  8. Inspect system for leaks.
  9. Identify the system indicating it has been retrofitted to Forane® 134a.
  10. Verify the system performance.

Using Forane® 134a provides the user with the most efficient and cost effective refrigerant choice in mobile air conditioning applications.
