Our Products and Markets

Maquiladora General de Matamoros S.A. de C.V. (MGM for short) manufactures two different families of products: acrylic sheets, using the cell cast process; and plastic modifiers, using the bulk process. The acrylic sheets are produced in various thicknesses from 1/8" to 2" in more than 30 colors and in three different sizes: 4' x 8', 5' x 8' and 6' x 8'. Our products are generally regarded as the best in the industry for color consistency, optics, impact resistance, weather resistance and UV filtering properties.

Our acrylic sheets are mainly used in three different markets: the sign industry, glass substitution and point of purchase. There are many more applications ranging from OEM parts to decorative items. Traditionally cell cast acrylic sheet is preferred over other acrylic sheets for its optics, machineability, formability and moderate solvent and impact resistance. Plexiglas® SB and Plexiglas® SBAR (security barrier abrasion resistance) acrylic sheet are used where bullet-resistant glazing is required.

Our History

The Altuglas International Matamoros plant is located 1/2 mile south from the Rio Grande, which forms the US/Mexican border, in the city of Matamoros in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The name of the Mexican company is Maquiladora General de Matamoros S.A. de C.V. (MGM for short). The name means General Tolling Company of Matamoros. It started operations in 1987, producing Plexiglas® acrylic sheets, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Rohm and Haas Company. In 1992, it became part of the joint venture between Elf Atochem and Rohm and Haas, AtoHaas. Today, the plant is owned and operated by MGM as a wholly owned subsidiary of Arkema Inc.

Our Location:

Matamoros was founded in 1686 by Captain Alonso de Léon. He named it Congregación de los Esteros Hermosos for the good pasture there that could be used to raise cattle. In 1826, the city was renamed Matamoros in honor of Mariano Matamoros, the revolutionary hero. Matamoros has had a largely cattle and cotton based economy until the 1990s, when the maquiladora industry began expanding. Today, the Matamoros economy is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing in Mexico.

The United States Consulate office in Matamoros is America’s oldest continuously active diplomatic post, reflecting the long history of relations between the countries.

Visitors to Matamoros and the state of Tamaulipas can enjoy beautiful beaches, diverse hunting and fishing opportunities, and many cultural and historical diversions.

Community Involvement

The plant is committed to the community, to its employees, its customers and its process. Our mission is to be a profitable integral part of Arkema Inc. and to become the preferred supplier of cell cast sheets in North America. We are combining our efforts to work as a team with other Altuglas International cell cast facilities in Europe to better serve customer needs around the world. We believe in the growth of the business based on innovation and in the development of new products. We strive to be a model company, respected for its ethics, its support to the community and for having talented and highly dedicated employees.

Our commitment to the community is demonstrated through CAER (Community Awareness and Emergency Response) programs. The plant has been the leader in the local industrial park in the development of a local emergency plan.

We are also pleased to contribute to the education of Matamoros youth through our contributions to the school district’s science education program. Schools receive hands-on science kits for use in the classroom, which provide teachers with an innovative means of teaching science. This has also been shown to increase the student’s interest in science as well.

Meet the Plant Manager - Mario Alvarado

"Part of my vision for the plant is to become a model company, well respected for its ethics and community support, currently our plant is perceived as a good neighbor that supports community initiatives, develops employees and cares for the environment. Last year we created a Community Advisory Panel for our plant -- common in the U.S., but not in Mexico. My wife and I do a lot of work coordinating a non-profit organization that enhances gifted high school students' research and language development and teaches science and technology to elementary school children - reaching some 3,500 students. Sunday morning breakfasts with my family are important to me -- and I love meeting with friends for a carne asada!"
