Our History

Arkema's Houston, Texas, facility was opened in 1952. Throughout our more than 50 years of operation, the plant has been an important contributor to the Houston area economy. At present, the plant contributes more than $5 million in taxes and salaries to the local economy each year.

Our Location

Our Houston plant is located in the bustling North Channel area of East Harris County, only a half hour from each of Houston's two major airports, and about 20 minutes from Houston's central business district. Our neighbors include a number of major industries, all drawn to the area by its proximity to transportation, including major highways, extensive rail lines and the Port of Houston, one of the country's largest and busiest seaports. We're a part of the East Harris County Manufacturer's Association, an organization of 88 plants that are located within an approximately 200-square mile area.

The North Channel area dates back to the 1860s, when the nearby town of Sheldon was founded as a stop on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. Dramatic growth, however, was delayed until the 1960s, when the Houston Ship Channel, originally built in 1914, became internationally important, and the construction of major highways made the area highly accessible.

Our Area

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, with a population of more than 1.6 million and covering a 556 square mile area. The Houston metropolitan area, with a population of more than 3.7 million, ranks eleventh in the nation. Our city is internationally known for the Texas Medical Center, Johnson Space Center, the Port of Houston and its booming petrochemical industry. National surveys rank Houston among the nation's most desirable places to live, highlighted by affordable living costs, attractive neighborhoods, outstanding cultural advantages, excellent shopping and world-class restaurants. Other features include a steadily declining crime rate and a moderate climate.

The North Channel area is served by three excellent school districts. San Jacinto College North and the University of Houston system, as well as a number of other community colleges and private four-year colleges and universities, offer higher education opportunities.

Commitment to Safety and the Environment

As active members of EHCMA (East Harris County Manufacturers Association) and the American Chemistry Council, the Arkema Inc., Houston plant is committed to the principles of Responsible Care®. Through Responsible Care, our industry demonstrates its continuing commitment to health, safety and the environment. We invest in environmental control equipment and technology as part of our ongoing commitment to environmental performance and compliance with stringent local state and federal laws.

Although our plant is designed and operated in a manner to minimize the possibility of an incident occurring, we place a high value on being prepared to handle all types of emergencies. The Houston plant employs a dedicated and experienced work force that is trained to handle both on-site and off-site emergencies. Our emergency response teams receive training at nationally recognized training facilities in Pueblo, Colorado (HazMat teams) and Texas A&M (fire school). The Houston site is an active participant in CIMA (Channel Industries Mutual Aid), an emergency response organization made up of refineries and chemical plants in the Houston industrial belt. Response drills are conducted periodically, to ensure our preparedness for a real emergency.

Responsible Care® is a registered trademark of the American Chemistry Council.

Community Involvement

As a corporate citizen of Houston, Arkema actively supports a variety of local organizations and events. Our plant is involved in the local Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA, North Channel Multicultural Festival, North Channel Area Green Team and the March of Dimes. Youth and education are also major focal points. The Houston Junior Achievement Program and the Galena Park school district receive continuing support from Arkema through volunteer service, plus financial and technical support. We're making an additional investment in the future through four-year college scholarships for the children of our employees. We also sponsor an annual science teacher workshop each summer, which is supported by the Arkema Inc. Foundation. Local science teachers spend a week studying experiment kits with the help of a plant scientist. The program is designed to help science teachers expand and enhance their science teaching skills. Listening to the members of our community plays a vital part in our relationship with our neighbors. Our plant is actively involved with the Haden Road Community Advisory Panel (HAD CAP), a group of local citizens who help Arkema and nearby plants maintain a vital two-way communications link with the businesses and residents in our area.
