Our Products and Markets
The Calvert City plant produces items used in a number of products that we use daily.
Our Kynar® PVDF resin is a tough plastic coating used as wire insulation and on the exterior of many buildings. Kynar® PVDF resin is also used in high performance piping systems including ultra pure water systems which in turn are used in the manufacturing of computer chips.
The Forane® refrigerants we produce are used as coolant in air conditioners and refrigeration equipment. They are also used in insulation for transportation, appliances and construction.
We also manufacture hydrochloric acid, an essential agent in the processing of corn syrup and artificial sweeteners.

Our History
The Arkema plant in Calvert City, Kentucky, began operations in 1948 as the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company. Throughout our history, the plant has been an important contributor to the Calvert City area economy. Today our plant employs more than 260 people and annually contributes more than $56,000,000 to the region's economy.
Our Location
Our plant is located on the banks of the Tennessee River in one of the largest industrialized areas of Kentucky. The Kentucky Dam and Lock and the river transportation it provides have attracted a number of multinational manufacturing firms to locate in the Calvert City Industrial Complex. Our plant was the first of the industrial manufacturers to settle in the community.

Commitment to Safety and the Environment
A productive, safe environment is of utmost importance to the Calvert City plant. We continue to be intensely involved in developing Forane® refrigerants which do not deplete the ozone layer. In 1997, we added the newest production unit at the Calvert City plant to manufacture Forane 134a, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant. In addition to developing new and safer products for consumer use, our plant is constantly upgrading the equipment and procedures to further manage and reduce emissions.
Our facility is certified to the Environmental Management Standard, ISO 14001. This standard demonstrates a proactive approach to our relationship with the environment. Our employees also perform an integral role in the Calvert City Environmental Forum. In addition, the Calvert Plant also participates in the Arkema E3 (Enhancing Environmental Excellence) Program, which is designed to identify and eliminate waste in production.
At Arkema, we stress safety and protection. Our employees are highly trained in the handling of the chemicals used in our plant. Our safety procedures have earned us a series of corporate and industry awards, including the prestigious Arkema President’s Platinum Award for 2003. This award is presented annually to a large facility within Arkema with a safety incident rate better than 90% of plants of comparable size.
Both OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard and EPA’s Risk Management regulations apply to the Calvert City plant. In addition, the plant has adopted Process Safety Practices (PSP) to enhance risk management efforts in plant operations outside the scope of either PSM or RMP regulations. Also, Arkema is committed to the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® Process Safety Code of Management Practices.
The CATS Process, a behavior based safety process, has been active at our plant since 1998. CATS (officially "Changing Attitudes Towards Safety") is a name chosen by plant personnel. The process keeps track of safe and at-risk behaviors through the conducting of observations. CATS de-emphasizes incident rate as a measurement of performance. Injury frequency decreases as at-risk behaviors and conditions are remedied through verbal interaction during the feedback process of such observations. In 2004, we were the first Arkema plant to be honored with the Marshall Turner Behavior Based Safety Award.
Our honors are representative of the Calvert City plant's dedication to the conservation of the environment in order to ensure the health and safety of present and future generations. We have planted over 30,000 white pines on our 840-acre site in Calvert City as part of the Tree City U.S.A. project to keep the city on the map. Much of our property serves as a natural habitat for local wildlife.
Responsible Care® is a registered trademark of the American Chemistry Council. Back to top
Community Involvement
As a corporate citizen of Calvert City, Arkema actively supports a variety of local organizations and events. We support the Paducah area and Marshall County Chambers of Commerce. We also contribute to the arts, the Calvert Area United Fund, local food banks, The Sheriff's Boys and Girls Ranch, Marshall County Exceptional School and The American Cancer Society.
Our plant is an active member of the Calvert City Industrial Mutual Aid Program, an organization designed to prepare for and respond to natural disasters or accidents. And our employees participate in the area's annual Good Neighbor Night, where we address neighbors' questions concerning our plant operations and environmental and safety performance. This event helps provide an open dialogue between plant neighbors and our employees.
In addition, we participate in a Community Advisory Team along with other plants in the Calvert City area. A facilitator conducts monthly meetings of the group, which is comprised of a cross-section of local residents and industry representatives. The Community Advisory Team helps increase dialogue between the community and industry, providing an avenue for information sharing and helping us identify and respond to community concerns. Through regular meetings and activities such as plant tours, we are able to regularly educate and update the community on plant activities of interest.
Arkema’s plant hosts an innovative, hands-on science program equipping area teachers for stimulating classroom training. Selected elementary teachers from area schools participate in the Science Teacher Program each year. The program gives teachers new methods of stimulating scientific interest for their students. Teachers are selected to participate with plant staff in a four-day mentor program utilizing science kits on a variety of subjects for use in grades 3,4,5 and 6. In addition to the kits, each teacher receives a stipend and the schools represented are awarded a donation for science education. Arkema Inc.’s Foundation solely sponsors the annual program.
