bioMeT® TBTO | Tributyltin Chloride (TBTC) | bioMeT® 66 | Silylacrylate Binder for Self Polishing Marine Paints
bioMeT® TBTO (bis [tri-n-butyltin] oxide) is a broad-spectrum biological control agent. It is a highly effective compound for use in approved microbiocide, fungicide, and wood preservative formulations (see below). It is not approved for use in marine anti-foulant paints.
bioMeT® TBTO is considered a pesticide, and is registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a manufacturing-use product (EPA registration 5204-1). As such, it is subject to the requirements of FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act). Customer end-use product formulations containing TBTO must also be registered with the EPA.
bioMeT® TBTO has been approved for the following uses:
- In formulation of wood preservatives
- In microbiocide formulations for water treatment in industrial and/or commercial cooling towers, evaporative condenser water cooling systems, and oilfield and petrochemical water subsurface injection systems
- In microbiocide and fungicide formulations for industrial or commercial textile treatment
- In microbiocide and fungicide formulations for use in hospitals, laboratory and institutional premises, in hatcheries, poultry, swine, and livestock premises, veterinary, laboratory animal, and animal breeder facilities
- In anti-foulant systems intended for use in conductivity sensors in oceanographic instruments.
bioMeT® TBTO may not be used to formulate anti-foulant coatings or paints, and is for commercial use only.
bioMeT® TBTO may be used to formulate products for specific use(s) not listed on the manufacturing-use product label (see above) if the formulator has complied with the U.S. EPA data submission requirements regarding the support of such use(s).
bioMeT® TBTO is manufactured to very high standards in the United States at our ISO-certified Mobile, Alabama plant. Some typical properties of bioMeT® TBTO are:

Tributyltin Chloride (TBTC)
Due to renewed demand, Tributyltin chloride (TBTC) will again be available starting in 2006. TBTC is primarily used as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals, wood preservatives, microbiocides and fungicides. Conversion of TBTC to other tributyltin compounds is somewhat easier with TBTC than TBTO. Some typical properties of TBTC are:

bioMeT® 66
bioMeT® 66 is a quaternary ammonium compound containing ~5% TBTO. bioMeT® 66 is an effective formulation that can be used to control slime, algae, and fungi in industrial and commercial cooling water systems, and related applications.
bioMeT® 66 is also registered with the U.S. EPA (registration number 5204-3), and is subject to the requirements of FIFRA.
bioMeT® 66 may not be available starting in 2007, pending a final business decision in late 2006.
Silylacrylate Binder for Self Polishing Marine Paints
Historically, our bioMeT® additives had been used worldwide for proven effectiveness in marine anti-foulant applications. In anti-foulant paints and coatings, they helped improve the speed and operating economy of commercial ships by significantly reducing fouling from barnacles, algae, tubeworms, hydroids, and other fouling species.
A new generation of environmentally friendly silylacrylate-based binder resins is being developed, and already shows impressive results in field tests.
Note: Arkema has discontinued the manufacture of bioMeT® TBT (tributyltin) based polymers for marine paint applications, and all inventory has been sold. bioMeT® TBTO, Tributyltin chloride (TBTC) and bioMeT® 66 will continue to be manufactured and sold for non-marine applications only.
