German Regulations

Formulations containing less than 5% organic peroxide or containing less than 0.5% active oxygen are not covered by this regulation.
Explosive organic peroxides fall under this regulation and also the German regulation for explosive substances.

The classification of organic peroxide is done by an official laboratory (usually the BAM).
The German classification is based on the burning rate test.

Organic Peroxides Classification
Ia : very fast burning: burning rate =300 kg/min
Ib : very fast burning: 140 =burning rate < 300 kg/min
II : fast burning: 60 =burning rate < 140 kg/min
III : burning rate: < 60 kg/min
IV : slow/no burning: very low burning rate

Location of storage for organic peroxides
There are three safety distances between organic peroxides storage and:

  • other storage
  • operating buildings
  • offices

These safety distances may be reduced if suitable safety measures are implemented.

Location of storage for explosive organic peroxides
For explosive organic peroxides, two more protective distances are applied between storage and:
  • residential areas
  • public roads
