Deformulation and Polymer Composition Analysis

Arkema's polymer deformulation services include a range of techniques to identify and quantify the various components of a particular system.  We can identify the matrix resin composition, as well as fillers, stabilizers, pigments, and other additives.  We can deformulate all types of polymers, including fibers, composites, coatings, paints and other materials.

Arkema's analytical laboratories canScanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) can map surface composition and identify surface contamination.
determine:

  • Primary polymer/resin identity
  • Copolymers
  • Thermal decomposition products
  • Molecular weight distribution
  • Functional groups
  • Residual monomer
  • Surfactants
  • Plasticizers
  • Additives/Fillers
  • Antioxidants
  • Thermal/Light stabilizers
  • Impact modifiers
  • Pigments/Colors

Depending on the material of interest, the techniques used for the deformulation analysis may include:

IR/Raman
NMR
LC/MS
Pyro GC/MS
XRF
XRD
